Naval Covers

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

WYFFELS received one battle star for World War II service

Combat Action Ribbon (retroactive) - American Campaign Medal - European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal w/ 1 star - WWII Victory Medal

NAMESAKE - Lawrence Edward Wyffels USN (January 20 1915 - October 26 1942)
Wyffels enlisted in the United States Navy on March 17 1936. He served in USS ENTERPRISE CV-6; and was advanced to Carpenter on June 25 1942. He was killed in enemy action on October 26 1942 when ENTERPRISE suffered bomb damage during the Battle of Santa Cruz Island. Disregarding his own safety, Carpenter Wyffels courageously fought the blaze ignited by bombs and repeatedly entered burning compartments to rescue the wounded trapped inside. Carpenter Wyffels was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his intrepid devotion to duty
