Other Information

USS TONAWANDA earned the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - From the creek which rises in Wyoming County, N.Y., and flows northwest through Niagara County to empty into the Niagara River. Tonawanda is a Seneca Indian word meaning "swift water," referring to river rapids.

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name TONAWANDA - USS Tonawanda (1864 Monitor) and USS Tonawanda AN-89.

NAMESAKE (Haiti) - Jean-Jacques Dessalines (20 September 1758 – 17 October 1806) was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1805 constitution.
