Commissioned 13 October 1944 - Decommissioned 6 April 1946
Recommissioned after upgrade 2 October 1953 - Decommissioned 1 July 1971

Transferred (leased) to the Republic of Turkey. Re-named and re-numbered
TCG Ulucalireis (S-338), she transited the Panama Canal and underwent overhaul
at Philadelphia Navy Yard until January 1972.

Commissioned 3 May 1972.
Sold to Turkey and struck from the US Naval Vessel Registry (NVR) 1 August 1973.
Decommissioned 7 August 2000.
Currently a museum ship at the Rahmi M. Koç Museum, Istanbul

USS THORNBACK earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 1 Battle star and the WWII Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A slender member of the shark family native to northern Atlantic waters ranging from the temperate to the arctic. The thornback has a long pointed snout and a sharp spine at the end of each dorsal fin.
