This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Keel Laid 24 February 1945, as MV TARLAND - Launched as RINCON 5 June 1945
    Delivered to the Maritime Commission, 5 October 1945 and chartered for operations

    Placed in service 1 July 1950 - Placed out of service 1976

    Transferred to MARAD for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet

  3. ROKS SO YANG AOE-55
    Transferred, (loaned) to South Korea 21 February 1982 & renamed
    Returned to the US Navy in the late 1990s

    Struck from the Naval Register, 23 October 1998
    Final Disposition, scrapped, circa 2000

Naval Covers

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

USNS RINCON earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal w/ 2 Campaign stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A municipality of Puerto Rico founded in 1771 by Don Luis de Añasco.

The ships sponsor is Mrs. J. L. Baker.
