The significance of the insignia of TORPEDO SQUADRON FIVE is that the figure representing a Valkyrie silhouetted against the setting sun. A Valkyrie was "one of the maidens of Odin, awful and beautiful, who hovered over the field of battle and chose those to be slain." The analogy between Valkyrie and the torpedo plane is that both are "choosers of the slain." Established and redesignated on 1 Jul 1937 as USS Yorktown CV-5 Air Group's VT squadron.
