Parris Island , South Carolina, consists of 8,095 acres, of which only 3,262 are habitable. The remaining acres are primarily salt marsh. On 1 November 1915, Parris Island was officially designated a Recruit Depot, and United States Marine Corps Recruit Training has continued there since then. In the early years of the Marine Corps presence it was referred to as Paris Island. Marine Corps Order No. 32 officially changed the name "Paris" to "Parris" on 3 May 1919. Enlisted female training began here on 15 February 1949. The base continues to train and build Marines at the present time.
