Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

MUGFORD earned 7 Battle Stars for her WWII service.
* December 7th 1941 at The Pearl Harbor Navy Yard

NAMESAKE - Named in Honor of James Mugford (1749-76) a captain in the Continental Navy. Captain Mugford commanded the schooner FRANKLIN in the Continental Navy, serving through 1775 in John Manley’s squadron off Boston. He captured the British ship HOPE with a large cargo of military stores and powder, and took his prize into Boston, running under the noses of the British fleet lying in the outer harbor. On may 19 1776, FRANKLIN was attacked while in the company of LADY WASHINGTON...Captain Mugford was killed in the action.
