Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Captured FINLAND, August 29 1861, off Apalachicola, FL.
Joined the East Gulf Blockading Squadron, January 20 1862
Took Schooner ISABEL, February 1 off Atchafalaya Bay
Joined the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, April 5 1862
Hunted for and found abandoned Schooner COLUMBIA in April burning her
Cruised the Mexican and Texas coasts helping free American citizens held in Mexico
Captured British Schooner WILL-O’-THE-WISP off the Rio Grande, June 3 1862
Further prizes were;
BLANCHE, chased ashore at Havana October 7 1862
British Steamer CAROLINE, taken off Mobile October 28 1862
Sloop WILLIAM E. CHESTER, taken November 20 1862
Joined the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, searching for Confederate cruisers CSS TACONY and CSS FLORIDA June and July 1863
Joined the Wilmington Blockade in August for the remainder of the year
Captured PET February 11 1864
Destroyed Blockade Runner SS DOVE June 7 1864
Captured BENDIGO aground on Wilmington Bar June 13 1864
Seized BAT off Western Bar October 11 1864
Participated in the attacks on and capture of Fort Fisher in December 1864 and January 1865
