Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Passenger Liner
    Built 1908 by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg

  1. SS CLEVELAND (Passenger Liner)
  2. Owned and operated by Hamburg America Line (HAPAG)

  3. USS MOBILE ID-4043
  4. Seized by the US Government in 1919 as World War I reparations and converted at Liverpool, England into a troop ship
    Commissioned March 26 1919 - Decommissioned November 25 1919
    Relinquished to the United States Shipping Board and briefly chartered by the White Star Line.

  5. SS KING ALEXANDER (Passenger Liner)
    Sold to the Byron Steamship Co. Ltd. in 1920 and renamed

  6. SS CLEVELAND (Passenger Liner)
    Sold to United American Lines in 1923 and original name restored
    Sold back to Hamburg America Line in 1926

    In 1933 HAPAG sold her back to Blohm & Voss for scrap

Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

NAMESAKE - Named for the city in the southwestern part of Alabama, located at the mouth of the Mobile River and at the head of Mobile Bay.
