Naval Covers

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS LOUISIANA earned the Mexican Service Medal and the World War I Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Named for the State of Louisiana.

The ships sponsor was Miss Juanita LaLande.

Five ships of the US Navy have borne the name LOUISIANA - USS Louisiana (1812 Sloop), USS Louisiana (1861 Propeller-driven Steamer), USS Louisiana BB-19, USS Louisiana BB-71 (Cancelled before her keel was laid down)
and USS Louisiana SSBN-743.

One ship of the US Revenue Cutter Service has borne the name LOUISIANA - USRC Louisiana (1819 Topsail Schooner).

One ship of the Confederate Navy has borne the name LOUISIANA - CSS Louisiana (1862 Ironclad)
