Other Information

KNUDSON earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (w/ 1 Battle star), the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal (with Asia clasp), the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Philippines Liberation Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Milton Lox Knudson USN (October 20 1923 - November 13 1942)
Knudson enlisted in the Navy July 1 1941. While serving in USS LAFFEY DD-459 in the Southwest Pacific he distinguished himself September 15 1942 during rescue operations for survivors of the torpedoed USS WASP CV-7. With "courageous disregard" for his personal safety, he dived over the side of his ship and swam considerable distances with lines to rescue the stricken carrier's exhausted sailors, thus saving the lives of many who otherwise might have perished. During the heroic night naval action off Guadalcanal November 13, Seaman First Class Knudson was killed when LAFFEY was sunk by Japanese torpedoes and gunfire. He was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his valor.
