Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

NAMESAKES -
Admiral John Sidney McCain, Sr., USN (August 9 1884 - September 6 1945).
Admiral John Sidney McCain, Jr., USN (January 17 1911 - March 22 1981).
Captain John Sidney McCain III, USN (29 August 1936 - 25 August 2018)
John S. McCain Sr. commanded the aircraft carrier USS Ranger CV-4, and acted as commander of the Fast Carrier Task Force through 1944.
John S. McCain Jr. commanded the submarines USS Gunnel SS-253 and USS Dentuda SS-335. Subsequently he held a number of posts, rising to Commander-in-Chief of the United States Pacific Command before retiring in 1972.
John S. McCain III graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958. While on a bombing mission over North Vietnam, 26 October 1967, he was shot down and held as a Prisoner of War until released 14 March 1973. He entered politics in 1982 and served as a Senator from the state of Arizona. He tried twice to run for President but failed.

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name JOHN S. McCAIN in their honor - USS John S. McCain DL-3 after Admiral McCain Sr.
USS John S. McCain DDG-56 is named after both Admirals
On 12 July 2018, at a rededication ceremony, Senator John McCain was added as a namesake, along with his father and grandfather.

The ships sponsor is Cindy McCain, the wife of Senator John McCain III.
