Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Other Information

USS JANSSEN earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, the European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal w/ 1 Battle star, and the World War II Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Lieutenant (j.g.) Ralph Wille Janssen, USNR (28 January 1915 - 26 October 1942)
         Janssen enlisted in the Naval Reserve on 12 October 1940. He was later appointed Midshipman, undergoing training on board USS Arkansas BB-33 and at the Naval Reserve Midshipman's School 1940-41. Upon commissioning, Janssen reported to destroyer USS Porter DD-356 2 August 1941, and served on her during the critical first months of the Pacific war. Promoted to Lieutenant (j.g.) 15 June 1942, he was killed when USS Porter was torpedoed by an enemy submarine during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, 26 October 1942.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Alfred Janssen, stepmother of Lieutenant (j.g.) Janssen.
