If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Awards, Citations and Campaign Ribbons...
Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (2) - American Campaign Medal - Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal - World War II Victory Medal - National Defense Service Medal - Philippine Liberation Medal.

NAMESAKE - Commander Howard Walter Gilmore, USN. Commander Gilmore was the C.O. of GROWLER SS-215 and received The Navy Cross for an attack on enemy destroyers during his first war patrol and a Gold Star in lieu of a second Navy Cross for his second war patrol. On his fourth war patrol, February 7 1943, Commander Gilmore ordered his ship to ram a Japanese fast gunboat. In the ensuing fight, Commander Gilmore was shot and killed but not before he ordered his bridge cleared and to 'Take her down !'. Commander Howard W. Gilmore was posthumously awarded The Medal of Honor for his actions to save his crew and ship.
