Other Information

USS HANK earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 4 Battle Stars and Korean Service Medal w/ 4 Battle Stars during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Lieutenant Commander William Hank, USN (25 September 1902 – 14 November 1942)
Hank was born at Norfolk, VA in 1902 and was a member of the Naval Academy Class of ’25. Before World War II, he served at various shore stations and in New York, Hull (DD 350) and Saratoga.
Hank was commissioned Lieutenant Commander in 1940, and took control of USS LAFFEY DD-724 1 April 1942. He received the Navy Cross for his skillful handling of the ship during the Battle of Cape Esperance. Hank received a second Navy Cross for heroism during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal 12-13 November 1942. As USS LAFFEY fought the Japanese battleship IJN HIEI she was sunk by large caliber gunfire and a torpedo. Lt. Cmdr. Hank was reported missing and presumed dead 14 November. His ship received the Presidential Unit Citation.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. William Edwin Hank, widow of Lt. Cmdr. Hank.
