Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

GENERAL HENRY W. BUTNER received the following awards during her Naval career: China Service Medal - American Campaign Medal - Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal - Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal - World War II Victory Medal - Navy Occupation Service Medal (with Asia clasp) - National Defense Service Medal - Korean Service Medal (2) - United Nations Service Medal - Republic of Korea War Service Medal

NAMESAKE - Henry W. Butner (April 6 1875 - March 13 1937)
Butner graduated from the Military Academy in 1898. He served in various capacities at posts at home and abroad until 1918 when he sailed for France with the A.E.F. During his service on the Western front, Butner took part in operations at St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. Returning to the United States, he commanded Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Okla., 1920-23; commanded a detachment of the Philippine Scouts; and served in various capacities until appointed Commanding General, Panama Canal Department, in 1936. Major General Butner died March 13 1937 in Washington, D.C.
