Chapter History

Admiral George Dewey Chapter #8, USCS was comprised of members from the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area.
   Chapter Organized: December 1933 (Bulletin No. 30); selected name for chapter at third regular meeting (USCS Log Jan 1936). Continued operations throughout WWII (Log July 1946). Nov 49 held 16th Founders Day banquet.
   Organizing members: Nagle C. Miller (#49), President; John Grove (#60), Vice Pres; L.H. Markley (#106), Secty; Jas H. Brookhart, Paul Cree, John C. Fritchey, Charles Hoffmeier, Elmer R. Long.
   Cachet Directors: 1934-35 L.H. Markley (USCS #106); 1936-40 Dr. Frank Stump (USCS #164).
   Chapter sponsored printed cachets with subjects related to Admiral Dewey. Covers were postmarked on the ship after commissioning. Several of the designs featured photos of the ship or Dewey or used printer’s cuts and type set legends. According to the Jan 1936 Log, a total of 7,500 covers were printed for the first seven events (average of 1,000+ per event)
