Cachet Maker Alfred M Roberts
Cachets should be listed in chronological order based on earliest known usage. Use the postmark date or best guess. This applies to add-on cachets as well.
Per research – it appears “A.M. Roberts” is Alfred Moss Roberts Sr. (1886-1973). In April 1941 he copyrighted slogans used for a number of these cartoon cachets. It appears they were all created before the U.S. entered WWII, generally with an anti-Nazi message. Examples are seen with various cancellations, not just ships, during the 1940’s. Based on that, it seems the cachets were sold blank, and the purchaser used them as they chose. Alfred M. Roberts himself was originally from Rochester, New York, graduated as an engineer from Cornel University and then Columbia. He worked as a mining engineer in Colorado, and then returned to New York, making his home at Hamburg. He owned the water company there, and was president until he retired in 1965. -- Research by Lloyd Ferrell, USCS.
