CD-5 -- THE "PHILADELPHIA" POSTMARK (1975-76)
Another postmark with slots in the base for variable wording. Made by a collector in Philadelphia in the mid-1970's for use on ships whose postmarks had not yet arrived, or had already been turned in, but the only opportunity that arose to use it was the decommissioning of LAFFEY. In the summer of 1976 the device was loaned to the submarine LOS ANGELES, which, although she had no post office, used it on seven occasions for commemorative covers for her sea trials and other events up through commissioning.
USS LAFFEY DD-724 - March 29 1975 - Last Day of Commission
USS LOS ANGELES SSN-688 - June 26 1976 - November 13 1976 - Sea Trials through First Day of Commission
This marking was revived and used again at the 1996 convention of the Universal Ship Cancellation Society in Irvine, California, with the name "LOS ANGELES" still in the dial.
