Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. Postmarks

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Vice Admiral Joel Thompson Boone, USN (August 29 1889 - April 2 1974).Boone was born in St. Clair PA and received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia PA in 1913. After his graduation he joined the US Naval Reserve Medical Corps and in 1915 was transferred to the Regular Navy. While serving with the US Marines at Vierzy, France on 19 July 1918 he earned the Medal of Honor. From 1922 to 1933 he served as White House physician to Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover.
    After many other postings he eventually became the Inspector General, US Navy Medical Corps in 1950. He retired from the Navy as a Vice Admiral in 1950 and served as Medical Director of the Veteran's Administration until 1955. He resided in Washington DC with his wife Helen Koch Boone until his death, on 2 April 1974, and burial at Arlington National Cemetary.
    In addition to the Medal of Honor, VAdm Boone received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V,” the Purple Heart Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Haitian Campaign Medal, the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, the World War I Victory Medal with six battle stars, the Army of Occupation in Germany Medal, a Letter of Commendation, the Navy Commendation Medal, the American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Campaign Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Badge. He also received the French Officer of the Legion of Honor, the Croix de Guerre with two palms, the Order of the Fourragere (three awards), and the Gold Medal of Honor and the Italian War Cross with Diploma.

The ships sponsor is Mrs. Milton F. Heller, Jr., daughter of the late Vice Admiral Boone.
