Naval Covers

Other Information

USS BAUER earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal w/2 stars, the Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Battle Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Lieutenant Colonel Harold William Bauer, USMC (November 20, 1908 – November 14, 1942)
     Bauer was a United States Marine Corps air group commander and fighter pilot ace credited with destroying 11 Japanese aircraft during World War II. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions as a fighter squadron commander during the crucial struggle for the control of the Solomons at the Battle of Guadalcanal.
     Bauer entered the Naval Academy in 1926 and was appointed a Marine Second Lieutenant upon graduation in 1930. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on May 29, 1934 and he earned his wings as a Marine aviator in February 1936. He was promoted to Captain on June 30, 1937. Bauer was promoted to Major on April 29, 1942 and after only three months, on August 7th 1942, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
     LtCol Bauer earned the following medals and ribbons during his US Marine Corps career - the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 1 service star and the World War II Victory Medal. LtCol Bauer is also authorized to wear the Naval Aviator Insignia.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Harold W. Bauer, widow of the late Lt. Col. Bauer, USMC.
