USS Minnesota and Rear Admiral S. P. Lee. Interesting pair of covers addressed to Samuel Phillips Lee, a cousin of Robert E. Lee who remained loyal to the Union and famously said "When I find the word Virginia in my commission I will join the Confederacy", each cover addressed to Lee on board the USS Minnesota at Old Point Comfort (Fortress Monroe), with 1c Blue (63) and 3c Rose (65) combination paying postage and carrier fee, tied by "Philadelphia Pa." 1862 year-dated circular datestamps, the first, dated Sep. 5 and addressed to "Capt." Lee, the second dated Sep. 13 and addressed to "Acting R. Admiral" Lee, reflecting Lee's new command of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, faint wax seal stain, otherwise Very Fine.

3c Brown Red (65). Deep shade, tied by grid cancel with clear strike of "U.S. Ship" double-circle with fleuron handstamp on small cover to Monson Mass., docketing on back "S. F. DuPont, Commodore" and "March 31st 1862", accompanied by small calling card with autograph "S. F. DuPont, U.S. Navy", tiny tear in top of cover, Very Fine, the ship marking with fleuron ornament is very scarce, desirable with the autograph of this famed naval commander.
