Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Gleaves Class Destroyer
    Keel Laid March 1 1939 - Launched March 9 1940

  1. USS KEARNY DD-432
    Commissioned September 13 1940
Struck by a German torpedo October 17 1941 off Iceland
11 of her crew were lost
    Decommissioned March 7 1946

    Stricken June 1 1971
Sold October 6 1972 and broken up for scrap

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. Covers Page 1     (1941-45)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

KEARNY received 3 battle stars for her service in World War II

NAMESAKE - Commodore Lawrence Kearny, USN (November 30 1789 – November 29 1868)
Kearny was appointed Midshipman in the Navy July 24 1807. Commodore Kearny was known for his tenacity in capturing slave traders in West-Indian waters and his tireless efforts in fighting Greek pirates in the Mediterranean. In the early 1840's he began negotiations with China which opened that country to U.S. trade and pointed the way toward the American "Open Door Policy" a half century later. He later served as Commandant at the Norfolk and New York Naval Shipyards. Retiring November 14 1861, Commodore Kearny died at Perth Amboy, N. J., November 29 1868.
