Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Legend Class 418-ft Maritime Security Cutter
    Keel Laid 20 July 2009 - Launched & Christened 23 July 2010

  1. USCGC STRATTON WMSL 752
    Commissioned (Special) 2 September 2011 - Commissioned (Full) 31 March 2012

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USCGC Stratton WMSL-752 Covers Page 1     (2009-2018)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

NAMESAKE - Captain Dorothy Constance Stratton, USCGR (March 24 1899 - September 17 2006)
Stratton was born in Brookfield, Missouri and died in West Lafayette, Indiana at the age of 107 years old.
Stratton was the director of the SPARS, the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve during World War II.
In late 1942, she was ordered to Washington, DC to the office of the Commandant of the Coast Guard to organize the Coast Guard Women's Reserve, and was transferred from the Navy to the Coast Guard. She came up with the name SPARS using a contraction of the Coast Guard motto Semper Paratus and its English translation Always Ready. She was appointed its first director with a rank of lieutenant commander.
For her service she was awarded the Legion of Merit.
After the war, Stratton served as director of personnel for the International Monetary Fund (1947 - 1950). In 1950, she became national executive director of the Girl Scouts of the USA, a post she held until 1960. In 1958, she appeared as a guest challenger on the TV panel show "To Tell The Truth".

The cutter's sponsor is Michelle Obama, who is the first First Lady to sponsor a Coast Guard cutter.
