Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Perch Class Submarine Keel Laid 25 February 1935 - Launched 9 May 1936 USS PERCH SS 176 Commissioned 19 November 1936 Scuttled 3 March 1942 between Java and Borneo on second patrol         after depth charging by Japanese destroyers Entire crew (59 men) were captured by the Japanese. Six men died in captivity Fifty-three men were repatriated on 13 September 1945 Struck from Naval Register 24 June 1942

Naval Covers

If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS PERCH earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ one battle star for her World War II service.

NAMESAKE - A type of fresh-water spiny-finned fish belonging to the family Percidae

Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name PERCH - USS Perch SS 176 and USS Perch IXSS 313

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Thomas Withers.
