USS LUCE received five battle stars for World War II service

NAMESAKE - Admiral Stephen Bleecker Luce, USN (March 25 1827 – July 28 1917)
Luce was a U.S. Navy admiral. He was the Commander-in-Chief, North Atlantic Squadron from 26 June 1884–20 September 1884. He was the founder and first president of the Naval War College, between 1884 and 1886 and then went back to the Commander-in-Chief, North Atlantic Squadron 18 June 1886–28 January 1889.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Stephen B. Luce, Jr., wife of Rear Adm. Stephen B. Luce's grandson.

Three ships of the US Navy have been named in his honor - USS Luce DD-99, USS Luce DD-522 and USS Luce DDG-38
