USS HALIBUT earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 7 Battle Stars and the WWII Victory Medal during her naval career.

NAMESAKE - Any of several large edible flatfishes of northern Atlantic or Pacific waters.

There has been two submarines of the US Navy that have borne the name HALIBUT - USS Halibut SS-232 and USS Halibut SSN-587.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. P. T. Blackburn.
