This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

  3. HMS FENCER D-64 (British Naval Service)
  4. Commissioned 1 March 1943
    US Navy redesignated her as CVE-14 on 15 July 1943 while still on loan.

  5. HMS FENCER R-308 (British Naval Service)
  6. Royal Navy designation temporarily changed to R308 for service in the Pacific, October 1944.
    Decommissioned 12 November 1946

  7. USS CROATAN CVE-14
  8. Returned to US Navy 12 November 1946 and arrived at Norfolk, Virginia, 11 December 1946

    Stricken for disposal, 28 January 1947

    COMMERCIAL SERVICE
    Sold in 1950 and converted to a passenger ship, renamed SS Sydney (Italian flag), 1950.
    Renamed SS Roma (1967),
    SS Galaxy Queen (1970),
    SS Lady Tina (1973),
    SS Caribia 2 (1973).
    Scrapped at La Spezia, Italy, starting September 1975

 

Naval Covers

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Named after a sound off the North Carolina coast.

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name CROATAN - USS Croatan CVE-14 and USS Croatan CVE-25.

HMS FENCER earned the following Battle Honours - Atlantic 1943-1944 — Norway 1944 — Arctic 1944 — Pacific 1945.
