Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Burke Class (Flight IIa) Guided Missile Destroyer
    Keel Laid 14 January 2002 - Launched 15 December 2002
    Christened 11 January 2003

  1. USS CHUNG-HOON DDG-93
  2. Commissioned (Special) 22 March 2004
    Commissioned 18 September 2004

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Chung-Hoon DDG-93 Covers Page 1    (2002-2021)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Rear Admiral Gordon Pai'ea Chung-Hoon, USN (July 10 1910 - July 24 1979).
A 1934 graduate of the US Naval Academy, Chung-Hoon was awarded the Navy Cross and Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and extraordinary heroism as commanding officer of the USS SIGSBEE DD-502. In the spring of 1945, SIGSBEE assisted in the destruction of 20 enemy planes while screening a carrier strike force off the Japanese Island of Kyushu. On April 14 1945, while on radar picket station off Okinawa, a kamikaze crashed the ship reducing her starboard engine to five knots and knocking out the ship's port engine and steering control. Despite the damage, Commander Chung-Hoon valiantly kept his antiaircraft batteries delivering "prolonged and effective fire" against the continuing enemy air attack while simultaneously directing the damage control efforts that allowed his ship to make port under her own power.

Ensign Chung-Hoon was aboard USS ARIZONA BB-39 during the Pearl Harbor Attack December 7 1941.

The ships sponsor is Michelle Punana Chung-Hoon of Honolulu, Hawaii, RAdm. Chung-Hoon's niece.
