Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 1    (1917-01-08 to 1919-05-01)
  2. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 2    (1919-05-11 to 1929-12-03)
  3. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 3    (1930-05-01 to 1933-12-25)
  4. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 4    (1934-02-24 to 1935-05-30)
  5. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 5    (1935-07-04 to 1935-10-27)
  6. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 6    (1935-11-11 to 1936-06-17)
  7. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 7    (1936-07-04 to 1937-02-22)
  8. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 8    (1937-03-17 to 1937-11-25)
  9. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 9    (1937-12-25 to 1938-04-22)
  10. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 10    (1938-05-16 to 1940-04-28)
  11. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 11    (1940-07-04 to 1941-12-02)
  12. USS Arizona BB-39 Covers Page 12    (1942 - present)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Locy Type 1z (C)

1918-02-17

Dial on this example is 32 millimeters (circular). By as early as July 1918 the width is elongated to 34mm and it gets worse after that.

Locy Type
3 (C)

(1916)

1917-01-08

Dial on this example is 33 millimeters (circular).

Locy Type
3 (C)

"BROOKLYN /

(1916)

1919-08-07

Dial on this example is 32.5 millimeters (circular).

Locy Type

(1921)

1921-04-17

Note:

Locy Type 3

1926-05-03

Dial on this example is 32 millimeters (circular).

Locy Type
3 (B-BBT)

"NAVY DAY /
LONG BEACH"

1932-10-27

Dial on this example is 33.5 x 34 millimeters (w x h). Need a better example that better shows the killer bar mold lines (BBT).

Locy Type

"FIRST,TIME /
CANCEL,USED"

1935-10-27

Dial on this example is 33 millimeters (circular).

Locy Type
3b (AC-OOX)

1917-05-30

Difficult to get good dial measurements due to severe smudging on all examples. Estimate is 33 to 34 x 34 to 35 millimeters (w x h).

Locy Type
3s (C)

1921-01-16

Dial on this example is 33 millimeters (circular). It is difficult to make out the serif lettering but look at the bottom of the Z in ARIZONA for the characteristic flag.

Locy Type 3s

1922-02-25

Dial on this example is 33 millimeters (circular). Note the location of the killer bars in relation to the lettering inside the dial. The placement is different than the 3s postmark from 1921-01-16.

Locy Type 6

1931-12-15

Dial on this example is 15 millimeters (circular).

1937-07-20

Dial on this example is 30 millimeters (circular).

Locy Type
9vz

1919-02-03

Dial on this example is 29 x 30 millimeters (w x h). Looks like a comma after "NAVY" but with only one example, it is not possible to tell if it is a period, comma, or just a smudge.

Locy Type
