Naval Covers
This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. Postmarks

Other Information
NAMESAKE - Colonel William Richard Higgins, USMC (15 January 1945 – 6 July 1990).
Col. Higgins was captured in 1988 while serving on a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. He was held hostage, tortured and eventually brutally murdered by his captors.
Col. Higgins’ military decorations include: the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit Medal, the Bronze Star Medal w/ Combat "V", the Purple Heart Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/ Combat "V" and 5⁄16" Gold Star, the Combat Action Ribbon w/ 5⁄16" Gold Star, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ two 3⁄16" Bronze Stars, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ 3⁄16" Bronze Star, the Presidential Citizen Medal, the Prisoner of War Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 3⁄16" Silver Star and 3⁄16" Bronze Star, the Navy and Marine Corps Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal w/ 5⁄16" Silver Star, the Vietnam Staff Service Medal 1st Class, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, the United Nations Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal
On March 18, 1992, President George Bush posthumously awarded Col. Higgins the Presidential Citizens Medal.
In April 2003, after over 10 years of trying to have Col. Higgins recognized as a prisoner of war, he was posthumously awarded a Prisoner of War Medal.
The ships sponsor is Lieutenant Colonel Robin Higgins, USMC (Ret), wife of Colonel William Higgins, USMC.
