GETTYSBURG
1863 - USS GETTYSBURG (Screw Steamer)
Named for a Pennsylvania town, and site of important battle in American Civil War, USS GETTYSBURG was built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1858 (first named "Douglass", then "Margaret and Jesse"). In 1863, she was a Confederate blockade runner and was captured off Wilmington, NC. Taken into federal service, her most notable Civil War experience was attacking Fort Fisher, NC. In October 1876, USS GETTYSBURG sailed for Europe, where she spent the next two years, before decommissioning in May 1879.

Postmarked in New York on February 18th and marked as received by the agent (red marking) on March 5th, 1877. (Note: The spelling of "despatch" is still acceptable, but "dispatch" is more common in current usage.)

Postmarked in New York on January 22th and marked as received by the agent (red marking) on February 4th, 1878. (Note: The spelling of "despatch" is still acceptable, but "dispatch" is more common in current usage.)
