Other Information

USS INDEPENDENCE earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon (4 awards), the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy "E" Ribbon (2 awards), the Navy Expeditionary Medal (3 awards), the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (5 awards), the Vietnam Service Medal (w/ 1 Campaign star), the Southwest Asia Service Medal (w/ 2 Campaign stars), the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Ribbon (Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm), the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - The desire to be free of domination by others.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Thomas S. Gates, Jr., Wife of the Hon. Thomas S. Gates, Jr., Secretary of the Navy.

Seven US Navy ships have been named Independence. USS Independence (Brig 1776), USS Independence (Sloop 1776), USS Independence (Ship of the Line 1814), USS Independence ID-3676, USS Independence CVL-22, USS Independence CV-62 and USS Independence LCS-2.
