NAMESAKE - Hospitalman Francis Colton Hammond, USN (November 9 1931 - March 27 1953).
HM Hammond was killed in action on March 27 1953 while serving as a platoon corpsman with the First Marine Division at Sanae-dong, Korea when that unit was subjected to a murderous barrage of hostile mortar and artillery fire. After reaching an intermediate objective during a counterattack against a heavily entrenched and numerically superior hostile force occupying ground on a bitterly contested outpost far in advance of the main line of resistance. A vicious assault by on-rushing enemy troops followed. Resolutely advancing through a veritable curtain of fire to aid his stricken comrades, Hammond, although critically wounded, valiantly continued to administer aid to the wounded throughout an exhausting four hour period. When the unit was ordered to withdraw, he skillfully directed the evacuation of casualties and remained in the area to assist the relieving hospital corpsmen until he was struck by an enemy mortar shell and fell, fatally wounded. As a result of his exceptional courage he was posthumously presented the Medal of Honor.
