This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS SKIPJACK earned the American Defense Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 7 Battle stars and the World War II Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Any of several kinds of fishes that jump above, or play at, the surface of the water.

The ships sponsor was Miss Frances Cuthbert Van Keuren, daughter of Captain Alexander H. Van Keuren, Superintending Constructor, New York Navy Yard.

There has been three submarines named SKIPJACK - USS Skipjack Submarine No. 24 (renamed USS E-1 SS-24), USS Skipjack SS-184 and USS Skipjack SSN-585.
