Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Watson Class Vehicle Cargo Ship
    Keel Laid 4 January 1999 - Launched 11 December 1999

  1. USNS CHARLTON T-AKR-314
  2. Placed in Service 23 May 2000
Sgt. Charlton, USA

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USNS Charlton T-AKR-314 Covers Page 1     (DATE RANGE)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Sergeant Cornelius H. Charlton, US Army (24 July 1929 – 2 June 1951)
Cornelius Charlton was born in Eastgulf, WV and enlisted in the US Army out of high school in 1946. Charlton left for Basic Combat Training in November 1946. In 1948, US President Harry S. Truman ordered the desegregation of the U.S. military with Executive Order 9981. Charlton was assigned to Allied-occupied Germany, where he served out his whole enlistment. Charlton opted to re-enlist, and his next assignment was with a military engineering battalion at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland.
In 1950, Charlton was assigned to the Occupation of Japan, and was given an administrative job on Okinawa with an engineering group of the Eighth United States Army. After he requesting transfer to a front line unit in South Korea, he was subsequently assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, part of the 25th Infantry Division. In late May and early June 1951, the Eighth Army launched "Operation Piledriver", a concentrated effort to push Chinese and North Korean troops further north and out of South Korea. On 2 June 1951, Sgt Charlton made a last ditch effort to break through a heavily defended bunker and during the battle, he was killed in action. For his heroic actions, Sgt Charlton earned the Medal of Honor. His parents received his medal on March 12, 1952, by Secretary of the Army Frank Pace.
Along with the Medal of Honor, Sgt Charlton also earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal w/ 'Germany' clasp, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal w/ 1 Campaign star, the United Nations Service Medal (Korea), the Korean War Service Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.
