Other Information

Designed as a Fast Hunter Killer based on "Atlanta CL-51" hull but class proved too costly to produce in large numbers and was canceled.

USS NORFOLK spent her entire career as a test and trials ship.

NAMESAKE - A seaport in southeastern Virginia on Hampton Roads.

Four vessels of the US Navy have borne the name NORFOLK - USS Norfolk (1798 Brig), USS Norfolk (CA-137) Keel Laid December 27 1944 - Cancelled August 12 1945, USS Norfolk (DL-1) and USS Norfolk SSN-714

The ships sponsor was by Miss Betty King Duckworth.
