A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Wrecked at Honda Point, CA with six other Destroyers in multiple grounding...USS CHAUNCEY DD-296, USS FULLER DD-297,
USS DELPHY DD-261, USS S.P. LEE DD-310, USS WOODBURY DD-309, and USS YOUNG DD-312
NAMESAKE - Major Samuel Nicholas, USMC (1744 – August 27, 1790).
Nicholas was the first officer commissioned in the United States Continental Marines (now the United States Marine Corps) and by tradition is considered to be the first Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Veteran of the Battle of Nassau, Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton, Nicholas served from 1775 to 1783.
Three ships in the US Navy have been named in his honor; USS NICHOLAS DD-311, USS NICHOLAS DD-449 and USS NICHOLAS FFG-47.
