Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Freighter
    Built 1907 by Union Iron Works at San Francisco

  1. SS MEXICAN (Commercial Service)
  2. Owned and operated by American-Hawaiian Steamship Company of New York City
    Acquired by U.S. Navy December 10 1917

  3. USS MEXICAN ID-1655
    Commissioned December 23 1917 - Decommissioned August 4 1919
    Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS) and served as an animal transport through the end of World War I.

  4. SS MEXICAN (Commercial Service)
  5. Returned to her owners the American Hawaiian Steamship Co. on 4 August 1919

    The U.S. War Shipping Administration converted the ship to an animal transport ship from late August to October 1944.
    From 1945 to 1947 used by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration to transport animals to Poland.

    Scrapped 1948

 

Naval Covers

Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

A Knights of Columbus "Coming Home" card for doughboys, using an image drawn by Norman Rockwell. The message from the band leader says that they put him on the wrong boat! The ship had no postal facilities.
