Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

JACK WILLIAMS earned the following awards during her Naval career - Combat Action Ribbon - Joint Meritorious Unit Award w/oak leaf cluster - Navy Unit Commendation - Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation - Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (2) - Navy Expeditionary Medal - National Defense Service Medal - Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal w/ 3 stars - Southwest Asia Service Medal w/ 1 star - Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon - Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait).

NAMESAKE - Named in Honor of Pharmacist's Mate Third Class Jack Williams USNR (October 18 1924 - March 3 1945).
With the Third Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, Fifth Marine Division, he participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima. On March 3 1945, when a Marine was wounded forward of the front lines, Williams courageously went to assist him and was hit by enemy fire. With determination, he completed his mission of mercy, dressed his own wounds, and rendered aid to another fallen Marine. On his way back to the rear, Williams was hit by an enemy sniper and died later that day. For his actions that day he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
