			SS ALGERIA

  The ship "SS Pennland" was built with the name "SS Algeria" for the "Cunard Line" by the dockyard "J & G Thomson" in Glasgow and launched 12th July 1870. The maiden voyage began on 27th September 1870 and lead from Liverpool via Queenstown to New York.
   The "SS Algeria" is a steamship with three masts and a length of 110, 08 metres (361,2 feet). She had a breath of 12,35 metres (41,4 feet) and a mass of 3,428 tons. 200 passengers in the 1st class and 1,054 in the steerage could travel in this construction made of steel. The "SS Algeria" had a service speed of 13 knots (24 km/h, 15 mph).
   In the year 1882 the "Red Star Line" bought the "SS Algeria" and renamed her to "SS Pennland". The first voyage under the flag of the "Red Star Line" began 13th May 1882 from Antwerp in Belgium to New York. Until 15th December 1894 the "Pennland" took the route Antwerp-New York and after this for a short time the route Antwerp-Philadelphia.
   From 27th March 1892 till 23th September 1903 the "SS Pennland" was chartered by the "American Line" and used for the routes Philadelphia-Liverpool, Antwerp-New York, Antwerp-Philadelphia and Philadelphia-Antwerp.
   In 1903 the "SS Pennland", the former "SS Algeria", was scrapped in Italy.

MV City of New York was an American motor Passenger/ Cargo ship built in 1930 by Sun Shipbuiling & Dry Dock Co., Chester, PA for the American South Africa Line Inc., New York. She was on route from LOURENCO MARQUES for NEW YORK with a cargo of 6,612 tons of chrome ore, wood, wool, hides and asbestos when she was torpedoed by German submarine U-160 and sunk on the 29th March 1942. 26 persons lost from a total 144.

			SS SANTA ELISA

SS Santa Elisa was a refrigerated cargo ship built for the United States Maritime Commission by Federal Shipbuilding of Kearny, New Jersey in 1941. Operated by the Grace Line, Santa Elisa was a member of Convoy WS 21S from Newport, England, for Malta as a part of "Operation Pedestal". After she straggled from the convoy, she was attacked and torpedoed by the Italian motor boats MAS 557 and 564 25 nautical miles (46 km) southeast of Cape Bon, Tunisia on on the night of 12/13 August 1942. MAS 557 strafed the vessel with her .51 Breda machine gun, killing four British army gunners, while the second motorboat launched a 450 mm torpedo that struck Santa Elisa on the starboard side near the No. 1 cargo hatch at about 05:17. The ship's cargo of aviation gasoline burst into flames. Santa Elisa eventually sank at approximately 07:17 on 13 August near position 36°20′N 11°28′E / 36.333°N 11.467°E / 36.333; 11.467Coordinates: 36°20′N 11°28′E / 36.333°N 11.467°E / 36.333; 11.467, and 28 survivors were rescued by HMS Penn and landed at Malta.

Commercial oil tanker belonging to the Humble Oil Co. (now Exxon). In 1969 she made an experimental voyage through the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the North Slope of Alaska and on out through the Bering Strait, to see if it was feasible to bring out oil from the North Slope by tanker. The basic answer was "no," which is why we now have the pipeline.
