Postmarks

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - GALLATIN is the sixth Coast Guard Cutter to be named after Albert Gallatin, who served as Secretary of the Treasury under the Presidents Jefferson and Madison. Gallatin was born in Switzerland in 1761 and came to America in 1780. In his long career of dedicated public service, he held office as Representative and Senator from the great state of Pennsylvania, Ambassador to France and the court of Saint James (Great Britain), and President of the National Bank.
He founded New York University and helped negotiate the treaty of Ghent to end the War of 1812. Albert Gallatin died in 1849 and is buried at Trinity Church, in New York City, where GALLATIN was home ported until 1996. {USCGC Gallatin website}

Six cutters of the US Revenue Service / US Coast Guard have borne the name GALLATIN - USN Gallatin (Revenue Cutter 1812-1813), USRC Gallatin (Cutter 1815-1824), USRC Gallatin (Cutter 1830-1840, 1848-1849), USRC Gallatin (Cutter 1874-1892), USCGC Gallatin (Patrol Boat 1926-1935), USCGC Gallatin WHEC-721.
