Cachets should be listed in chronological order based on earliest known usage. Use the postmark date or best guess. This applies to add-on cachets as well.

Historical Data

Organized: July 30, 1934 (Bulletins No. 44 & 45) as Oregon Chapter with 16 charter members. Meetings were actually held on board the old battleship, now a museum ship at Portland, Oregon. Myron McCamley was the original "commander" and driving force of the chapter. Organizing members: Myron McCamley (#179), President; Joseph C. Formick (#357), Vice Pres; Ross B. Hare (#432), Secty; Elbert I. Hannaford, Treasurer; Edward A. Peake (#646), Arthur Delmore (#314), Louis R. Diesing (#645), Ernest W. Jenkins (#183), Reginald E. Linto (#599).
Cachet directors: 1934-36 Louis R. Diesing, 1937 Myron McCamley (and also Raymond Van Tress). The Chapter ceased operations after 1938, and was officially defunct per the 1940 USCS Yearbook.

Note: The May 1965 USCS Log (page 2) mentions an attempt to organize a new USS Oregon Chapter, but it wasn't until 1977 that USS OREGON Chapter #79 was formed.

Close-up of the Chapter marking
from the back of the May 30 1935 cover

Note: This "Berthed at Portland" rubber stamp appears on most chapter covers, usually on the back. It was used on the first chapter cachet, Navy Day, Oct. 27, 1934. The early version of the rubber stamp had a "179" (Myron McCamley's USCS number) extending out from the dial, but that was removed sometime in early 1935.

Cachet by Elbert I. Hannaford and sponsored by the USCS Battleship Oregon Chapter. The design by Hannaford is conformed per Oregonian newspaper,26 Nov 1934, p12. It depicts "an Oregon turkey" and was the first seapost cachet the chapter did. Covers were taken on board PERSHING when she left Portland and cancelled 500 miles out at sea. When the ship arrived at Yokohama, they were transferred to another ship returning to the west coast.

Peake, the original exchange manager for the chapter. Notice the back has the "Berthed in Portland" rubber stamp on the back, done in red ink.

Note: This cachet was originally used by the Battleship Oregon Chapter in 1934. The chapter no longer sponsored cachets after 1938, and was defunct sometime in 1939. However, McCamley used this old cachet, deleted the year, but left the wording about the old chapter. He also converted the image to a rubber stamp, so it lacks much of the original detail. Cancels are usually seen on USS COLORADO, but it was also used on other ships.
