New page

<!-- How to edit this page:

For detailed information on editing this page, click the "How To Edit Pages" link
in the navigation bar and look for the article on "Editing Ship Pages". If you
run into trouble or need to do something a little more complicated, contact the
Curator for help.

Don't forget to preview the page before saving it and please add a short description
of the change in the Summary text box just above the Save / Show buttons at the bottom
of the page. A short description would be something like "added naval covers".

Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime.
The list is in chronological order.

Evarts Class Type GMT Destroyer Escort
Keel Laid September 7 1942 for Great Britain as BDE-38
Launched June 3 1943
Retained June 16 1943 and named WYMAN

USS WYMAN DE-38
Commissioned September 1 1943 - Decommissioned December 17 1945

Sold April 16 1947 to the National Steel and Metal Company, of Terminal Island, CA, for scrap

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the
ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie,
for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should
be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't
take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date
range for covers on that page.

Cover Page 1 (1944)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a
separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry
in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks
should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark
has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest
known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.
NAMESAKE - Eldon P. Wyman USNR (January 11 1917 - December 7 1941)
Wyman attended the University of Oregon from 1936 to 1940 before he enlisted in the Naval Reserve as an Apprentice Seaman on August 22 1940 at Portland. After training in USS TUSCALOOSA CA-37, he accepted an appointment as Midshipman in the Naval Reserve on March 17 1941. Attending the Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at Northwestern University, Chicago, Il., Wyman was commissioned Ensign on June 12 and reported to USS OKLAHOMA BB-37 on July 19. That battleship subsequently operated out of Pearl Harbor as a unit of Battleship Division 1 on exercises in the Hawaiian operating area and off the west coast as tensions increased in the Pacific and in the Far East. By early December 1941, Wyman was serving as Junior Watch Officer of the ship's "F" (fire control) division. Moored outboard of USS MARYLAND BB-46 on December 7 1941, OKLAHOMA took four aerial torpedoes and rolled over at her berth; among those trapped within the doomed ship's hull was Ensign Wyman
