As Captain of the ship Reprisal in 1776, he and his crew sailed many miles and captured many British ships and their crews. On 14 September 1777, Wickes left France in Reprisal, in company with Dolphin, bound for home. Around 1 October 1777, Reprisal foundered off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, with the loss of all hands except the cook.<br/><br/>
			The ships sponsor was Miss Catherine Young Wickes, the great-great-grandniece of Lambert Wickes.<br/><br/>
