The piece was mailed from Lynn Massachusetts to the USC&GS Schooner READY. Rerouted to the Coast Survey Office, Washington DC. Postmarked from New York (Duplex #42) on May 13 1886, to Washington DC on May 14 1886. Ensign Sweeting had been reassigned to the USC&GS Schooner THOMAS R. GEDNEY and this cover was forwarded to Port Eads, Louisiana. Postmarks on the back show it reached Port Eads on May 19 1886. Two other readable postmarks from Washington DC; "Box Department 4" and "Washington Rec'd 1" are both dated May 14th 1886.
