For detailed information on editing this page, click the "How To Edit Pages" link
in the navigation bar and look for the article on "Editing Ship Pages". If you
run into trouble or need to do something a little more complicated, contact the
Curator for help.

Don't forget to preview the page before saving it and please add a short description
of the change in the Summary text box just above the Save / Show buttons at the bottom
of the page. A short description would be something like "added naval covers".

Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime.
The list is in chronological order.

Barrett Class Transport
Launched January 1 1951 - Reassigned to the US Navy and renamed "UPSHUR" while under conversion

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the
ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie,
for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should
be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't
take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date
range for covers on that page.

[[PAGE_NAME_Covers_Page_1 | Covers Page 1]] (1972)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a
separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry
in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks
should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark
has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest
known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.

Other Information

'''NAMESAKE''' - Major General William Peterkin Upshur, USMC (October 28 1881 - July 21 1943)
Upshur graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and received a commission as Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on February 1 1904. Over the ensuing three and one-half decades, Upshur rose in rank and eventually became a Major General on October 1 1939.
After various tours of sea and shore duties between 1904 - 1915, his next tour of duty—in Haiti—Upshur won the Medal of Honor. While his detachment of mounted Marines forded a river in a deep ravine, they came under the fire of some 400 Haitian Caco bandits from an ambush. Leading his men forward through the heavy fusillade, Upshur succeeded in establishing a defensive position which protected his command for the night. At daybreak on the folowing day, October 24 1915, Upshur led a fierce counterattack which caught the Cacos unawares and routed them. This action materially aided the Marines in their eventual capture of the Haitian stronghold, Fort Dipitie.
Upshur was a veteran of World War I and other sea and shore duties, eventually ending up as the Commander, Headquarters of the Department of the Pacific, at San Diego on December 9 1941.
Major General Upshur died as a result of injuries suffered in a plane crash near Sitka, Alaska, on July 21 1943.
