This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a
separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set,
the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one
postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of
earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

STRAUS received three battle stars for World War II service<br/><br/>
Awards, Citations and Campaign Ribbons...<br/>
American Campaign Medal - Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 3 stars - World War II Victory Medal<br/><br/>
NAMESAKE - David H. Straus, Jr. USNR (August 13 1916 - May 8 1942)<br/>
Straus enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve, Class V-6, as a Storekeeper Second Class on July 31 1941 and was placed on inactive duty. Straus was called to active duty on August 18 and reported to the Receiving Station, San Diego, Calif. On October 13 1941, he was transferred to [[LEXINGTON CV 2|USS LEXINGTON CV-2]]. A commission as Ensign in the Naval Reserve was issued to Straus on May 5 1942; but, before he took the oath of office, he was killed on May 8 1942 when LEXINGTON was sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea
