On Jan. 27, 1939 PRES GARFIELD departed New York, went to Havana and then thru Panama Canal to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, and other destinations. It appears the purser marked all covers the day after departure. About mid-1940, the name of the ship was changed to PRESIDENT MADISON.
