'''NAMESAKE''' - Major Samuel Nicholas, USMC (1744 – August 27, 1790).<br/>Nicholas was the first officer commissioned in the United States Continental Marines (now the United States Marine Corps) and by tradition is considered to be the first Commandant of the Marine Corps.<br/>Veteran of the Battle of Nassau, Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton, Nicholas served from 1775 to 1783<br/><br/>Three ships in the US Navy have been named in his honor; USS Nicholas DD-311, USS Nicholas DD-449 and USS Nicholas FFG-47.
